OpenAI has introduced group chats in ChatGPT. Group chats in ChatGPT allow you to invite multiple users (colleagues or friends) to a single shared conversation with ChatGPT powered by GPT‑5.1 Auto. Users can invite up to 20 people to join the same room and collaborate alongside ChatGPT on everything from weekend plans to work projects.
In this article, you'll learn:
- What are group chats in ChatGPT?
- What problem does it solve?
- How to use it?
What are group chats in ChatGPT?
Group chats in ChatGPT are a single shared space where you can bring together multiple people (friends, family, or coworkers) to plan, make decisions, or collaborate on ideas. The group chat is a single continuous chat room where every member can interact with ChatGPT simultaneously. This feature makes it easier for people to collaborate with each other and with ChatGPT all in the same conversation.

What problem do group chats in ChatGPT solve?
This new feature solves several problems, some of which are very useful, while others might just be slightly faster or more convenient for users. For example:
- Now you no longer need to take a screenshot of the AI-generated response or copy-paste ChatGPT answers into a group chat/ your conversation with someone.
That might be one example of the convenience that the feature brings, and you don't need to repeat the cycle in case there are follow-up questions.
- A major problem it solves is context switching. Let me explain. When three people ask ChatGPT about the same project separately, you get three different conversations, three slightly different directions, and not a single source of context that all humans and AI share.
However, in group chats, there's a single shared context/thread for all decisions, clarifications, and files. ChatGPT keeps track of how the group's thinking evolves, and nobody has to update ChatGPT in a new chat. So, no more context switching.
There are other problems that it solves, like:
- It can summarize long back-and-forth and run quick research or comparisons on demand.
- If ChatGPT starts hallucinating or making mistakes, it's easier to spot them to provide missing context and get answers.
How to use group chats in ChatGPT:
- To start a group chat, tap the people icon in the top right corner of any new or existing chat.

- Click on Start group chat.

- Finally, share the group joining link with your family, friends, or coworkers.

When you add people to an existing chat, ChatGPT creates a copy of your conversation as a new group chat so your original conversation stays separate. You can invite others directly by sharing a link with one to twenty people, and anyone in the group can share that link to bring others in.
When you join or create your first group chat, you'll be asked to set up a short profile with your name, username, and photo so everyone knows who's in the conversation.

Group chats can be found in a new, clearly labeled section of the sidebar for easy access.

Editor's note:
The things I personally like are that the group chats are similar to other collaborative group chat platforms, with ChatGPT being a collaborative assistant that takes note of every new conversation, adding to its context. You can easily add and remove someone from the group, and newly added members can scroll up to read the past conversation.
Most importantly, everyone in the chat can see the prompt and the response simultaneously, reducing the burden of prompt engineering on a single person. If ChatGPT misunderstands a request, your colleague can jump in with a correction immediately, creating a faster feedback loop.
